Article: How to turn your evening skincare routine into a luxurious spa ritual

How to turn your evening skincare routine into a luxurious spa ritual

How to turn your evening skincare routine into a luxurious spa ritual

By: Jo Boyden

Most nights, I’m sure many of us follow a pretty simple skincare routine: cleanse, apply serum, moisturise and we’re done. Often all in five minutes (or less!).

But every now and then, why not turn that everyday routine into something a little more indulgent? When time allows, that is!

We're talking warm towels, a proper double cleanse, gentle exfoliation, a beautiful face mask, facial massage, all those extra skincare steps you never seem to have time for during the week. Not only does it give you an excuse to switch off for half an hour, it's also a chance to give your skin some extra attention too. And the best part? It doesn't need to be complicated. A little more time, those few extra skincare steps and some simple spa-inspired touches are all it takes to make your usual evening routine feel like a real treat.

So, next time you have a quiet evening (or simply feel like your skin, and you, could do with a little extra pampering), put your phone away (yes, really!), take your time and turn your everyday skincare routine into something that feels a whole lot more special. Here's how...

First, set the scene

You don't need to transform your bathroom into a treatment room, but a few little touches can make your everyday skincare routine feel surprisingly different.

Tie your hair back, grab a couple of clean, soft towels and make sure everything you need is within reach. Dim the lights, light your favourite candle, put on some music or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. And perhaps most importantly, put your phone somewhere you can't reach it! Even 20 minutes without emails, messages or scrolling can feel like a treat in itself.

Now, onto your skin...

Step 1: Start with a proper cleanse

If there's one night to spend a little longer cleansing, this is it.

Start by removing makeup, SPF, excess oil and everything else that's accumulated on your skin throughout the day. If you've been wearing makeup or sunscreen, you might want to double cleanse, the first cleanse removes the day, while the second gives your skin a more thorough clean. And don't rush it! Spend a minute gently massaging your cleanser over your face and neck.

Then, instead of simply rinsing with lukewarm water as you usually would, add a little spa touch by soaking a soft face cloth in comfortably warm water and gently use it to remove your cleanser. It's such a simple thing, but instantly makes an everyday cleanse feel that little bit more special.

Try: Pevonia Power Repair Hydrating Cleanser. This beautifully creamy cleanser is suitable for all skin types, but particularly lovely for dry, dehydrated and mature skin. It gently removes makeup and impurities while leaving skin feeling soft, clean and comfortable, never stripped or tight.

Step 2: Gently exfoliate

Exfoliation isn't an everyday skincare step, nor should it be. For most skin types, once or twice a week is usually enough, although how often you exfoliate will depend on your skin and the type of exfoliant you're using.
If exfoliation is one of those steps you often forget (or perhaps skip altogether!), your at-home spa ritual is the perfect time to include it. Gently removing dead surface skin cells can help smooth rough texture and revive a dull-looking complexion, leaving your skin feeling beautifully soft and ready for your mask and the products to follow.

But remember, gentle is the key word here! There's no need to scrub away at your skin in pursuit of a glow. Choose an exfoliant suited to your skin type and, if your skin is feeling particularly sensitive or irritated, simply skip this step.

We highly recommend Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser. It’s a creamy, non-foaming exfoliating cleanser that gently buffs away dead surface cells and impurities with jojoba beads and soothing botanicals to leave skin feeling smoother and looking brighter!

Step 3: Apply a mask and actually relax!

Now for the part that really makes your everyday skincare routine feel more like a facial!

Choose your mask according to what your skin needs right now. Feeling dry or dehydrated? Go for hydration. Looking dull and tired? Choose something revitalising and brightening. If your skin is feeling sensitive, reach for something soothing and calming.

We are currently loving Pevonia’s Power Repair Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mask. It’s the perfect remedy when your skin is crying out for hydration. Formulated with ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, this intensive mask helps replenish moisture and leave skin looking plumper, smoother and more radiant in just 10–15 minutes.

Then comes perhaps the hardest part! Leave it alone and actually relax while it works its magic! No emptying the dishwasher, sorting the washing or replying to emails! This is supposed to be your spa moment, remember?

Step 4: Serum and a little facial massage

Once you've removed your mask, it's time for your serum. This is where you can really tailor your routine to what your skin needs most, whether that's an extra boost of hydration, calming sensitivity, brightening dull skin or targeting visible signs of ageing.

Choose your favourite serum or concentrate according to your main skin concern. We recommend reaching for the Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum if dehydration is your priority, Pevonia C Complexe with Oxyzomes for brightening and antioxidant protection, or Pevonia’s Collagen Intensifier to help firm and smooth the appearance of ageing skin.

And if you want to make this step feel a little more spa-like, add a few drops of facial oil and spend a couple of minutes gently massaging your face, neck and décolletage using upward and outward movements.

Try: Pevonia Vitaminic Concentrate. This beautifully scented, nourishing facial oil combines antioxidant vitamins with botanical oils to soften and replenish dry-feeling skin while providing the perfect slip for a little facial massage.
No complicated technique required, a couple of minutes is plenty!

Step 5: Finish with your moisturiser

And finally, seal everything in with your favourite moisturiser. There's no need to introduce something new here just because you're having an at-home facial. Use the moisturiser you already know works for your skin, smoothing it gently over your face, neck and décolletage. Add your usual eye cream too, if you use one!

And that's it! No complicated 10-step routine and no need to do it every night! Your usual cleanse, serum and moisturiser can carry on doing their job most evenings.

But once a week, once a fortnight, or simply when you have a little extra time, adding exfoliation, a mask and a few minutes of facial massage can turn that everyday routine into a more indulgent ritual, while giving your skin some extra attention at the same time. And if you emerge with beautifully soft, glowing skin? Even better!
