Article: Why your moisturiser isn’t enough (and what your skin actually needs)

Why your moisturiser isn’t enough (and what your skin actually needs)

Why your moisturiser isn’t enough (and what your skin actually needs)

By: Jo Boyden

You’ve cleansed your skin, applied your serum and moisturiser, only for your skin to feel parched just a few hours later. Maybe your face cream just isn’t rich enough? Perhaps it’s time to switch to something heavier?

Not necessarily…If your skin still feels thirsty despite moisturising every day, the problem may not be your moisturiser at all! Your skin could be lacking water rather than oil, your skin barrier might need some attention or there may simply be something missing from your routine.

Moisturisers are essential, especially in winter, but they can’t always give your skin everything it needs on their own. They help keep skin soft and comfortable, support the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss. But if your skin is already dehydrated, simply applying a rich cream may not be enough.

That’s where hydrating serums, mists and masks can make a real difference.
So, before you invest in the richest cream you can find, let’s work out what your skin actually needs.

First things first, is your skin dry or dehydrated?

They might sound like the same thing, but dry and dehydrated skin are different.

Dry skin lacks oil. It’s generally a skin type and may feel rough, flaky or uncomfortable, often benefiting from richer creams and nourishing oils.
Dehydrated skin lacks water. It’s a temporary skin condition that can affect any skin type, including oily skin. It can leave your complexion feeling tight and looking dull, while making fine lines appear more noticeable.

And, just to make things slightly more confusing, your skin can be dry and dehydrated at the same time!

Understanding which one you're dealing with matters because a richer moisturiser might be exactly what genuinely dry skin needs. But if dehydration is the problem, you may need to focus on getting more water-based hydration into your routine, and helping your skin hold onto it!

Not sure which one sounds like your skin? Read our Dry vs dehydrated skin: What’s the difference? guide to learn how to tell the difference and what each one actually needs.

Why your skin still feels tight after moisturising

There are several possible reasons! Your skin may be dehydrated, your moisturiser might not be quite right for your skin type, or your skin barrier may be struggling to retain moisture effectively. Over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, strong active ingredients, cold weather, heating and air conditioning can all play a part too.

So rather than immediately swapping your moisturiser for the heaviest cream you can find, take a look at your routine as a whole.

Does your skin feel tight immediately after cleansing? Are you exfoliating more than you need to? Have you recently introduced retinol or acids? And are you actually adding much hydration before your moisturiser?

Why hydrating serums matter

You may already be using a serum every day, but is it actually a hydrating one? Serums are designed to target different concerns, so while yours might be brilliant for brightening, pigmentation or fine lines, it may not be giving thirsty skin the hydration it needs.

This is where ingredients such as hyaluronic acid can help. As a humectant, hyaluronic acid attracts and binds water within the skin, helping dehydrated skin feel more comfortable and look plumper and smoother. Apply your hydrating serum before moisturiser, which then helps to keep that hydration where you want it.

Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Serum. Formulated with ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, it delivers an intensive hit of hydration to help thirsty skin look plumper, smoother and fresher.

And here’s a simple trick: try applying your hydrating serum while your skin is still slightly damp after cleansing or toning. You don’t want a dripping-wet face, just a little moisture for those humectants to work with, before following with your face cream.

Where does a face mist fit in?

A hydrating face mist can be a excellent extra step, particularly if your skin tends to feel tight during the day.

Use one after cleansing and before your serum or moisturiser, or spritz throughout the day whenever your skin needs refreshing. Just remember that a mist doesn’t replace your moisturiser, think of it as adding an extra layer of water-based hydration rather than sealing everything in. It can be particularly useful if you spend a lot of time in air conditioning or heating, both of which can leave skin feeling increasingly thirsty as the day goes on.

Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid HydraMist. This lightweight, ultra-hydrating mist combines moisture-binding hyaluronic acid and glycerin with soothing botanicals including aloe vera, chamomile and calendula to instantly refresh thirsty skin.

Give thirsty skin an extra boost with a mask

Sometimes your everyday routine is doing its job, but your skin still needs a little something extra.

A hydrating mask once or twice a week can deliver a more intensive dose of hydration and is particularly useful when your complexion is looking dull, feeling tight or simply needs a boost before an event.

Try: Pevonia Hyaluronic Acid Hydra Mask. Rich in ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, it helps replenish hydration and leaves skin looking noticeably plumper, smoother and more radiant in just 10–15 minutes!

What about face oils?

Face oils can be wonderful for dry skin, but there’s an important distinction to remember: oil and hydration aren’t the same thing!

An oil can help replenish lipids, soften the skin and reduce moisture loss, but it isn’t adding water to dehydrated skin. That’s why particularly dry or dehydrated skin may benefit from a hydrating serum followed by moisturiser and, if needed, a few drops of face oil.

Try: Pevonia Vitaminic Concentrate. This nourishing face oil combines vitamins with botanical oils to help soften, comfort and replenish dry-feeling skin.
That doesn’t mean you need serum, moisturiser and oil every night. It’s about adjusting your routine according to what your skin needs.

Don’t forget your skin barrier

If it feels as though hydration disappears almost as quickly as you apply it, your skin barrier could be part of the problem.

Your skin barrier helps keep moisture in and irritants out. When it isn’t functioning at its best, water can escape more easily, leaving skin feeling dry, tight or sensitive.

If that sounds familiar, constantly adding more active ingredients isn’t necessarily the answer. Keep things gentle and look for hydrating and nourishing ingredients that help support and replenish the skin barrier.

Try: Pevonia Age Correction Marine Collagen Cream. With ceramides, hyaluronic acid, marine collagen and peptides, this best-selling cream provides both hydration and nourishing barrier support for dry, mature skin.

So, do you need a new moisturiser?

Maybe, but don’t assume that’s the answer.

If your skin is genuinely dry, a richer moisturiser may make a noticeable difference. If it’s dehydrated, adding a water-binding serum underneath your existing moisturiser might be more useful. And if your skin is feeling unusually sensitive or losing moisture quickly, your barrier may need some extra attention.

The important thing is to look at what your skin is telling you rather than simply piling on more cream.

Because sometimes your moisturiser is doing its job perfectly well, your skin just needs a little more help around it.
