Struggling with redness this winter? The sensitive skin routine we always recommend

By: Jo Boyden

If you're already dealing with sensitive or redness-prone skin, you'll know that winter can be particularly challenging. Your skin seems to become even more reactive, redness lingers for longer, flushing happens more easily, and your complexion can feel tight, uncomfortable and irritated almost daily! Even products your skin usually tolerates well can suddenly leave it feeling unsettled.

That's because winter creates the perfect conditions for sensitive skin to flare, and while we can't change the weather, we can change how our skin responds with a routine specifically designed to calm, comfort and protect.

Want to know the routine we always recommend for sensitive and redness-prone skin? Keep reading.

Firstly though, why does skin become redder and more sensitive during winter?

Winter creates the perfect storm for sensitive skin! There are several reasons why redness and sensitivity often worsen during the colder months, including:

Your skin barrier becomes weaker
Your skin barrier is responsible for keeping moisture in and irritants out. Cold temperatures and dry air gradually weaken this protective layer, allowing water to escape and making skin much more vulnerable to inflammation.

Cold weather causes blood vessels to react
Moving between freezing outdoor temperatures and heated indoor environments causes blood vessels to rapidly expand and contract. For anyone prone to flushing or rosacea, this can leave skin looking persistently red.

Moisture levels drop
Winter air contains much less humidity than summer. This means your skin loses water more quickly, often leaving it feeling tight, dehydrated and more reactive.

Over-cleansing can make things worse
Foaming cleansers and harsh exfoliants may leave skin feeling clean initially, but they can strip away the natural oils your skin desperately needs during winter.

The key to managing winter redness isn't simply adding heavier moisturisers, it's about supporting the skin barrier while reducing inflammation and irritation.

The sensitive skin routine we always recommend

Step 1. Start with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser
One of the mistakes that so many people make in winter, even people with already sensitive skin, is over-cleansing or using products that leave skin feeling squeaky clean! Unfortunately, this can further compromise the skin barrier and worsen redness.

Instead, opt for a gentle, soothing, creamy cleanser that removes impurities without disrupting the skin's barrier.

Our recommendation: Pevonia RS2 Gentle Cleanser

Specially formulated for hypersensitive, rosacea and redness-prone skin, this remarkably soothing creamy cleanser removes impurities while helping calm visible redness.

Why we love it: It uses a luxurious blend of Allantoin, French Rose, and Chamomile to gently lift away impurities while actively cooling, soothing, and decongesting the skin without stripping away your precious lipids. It really is an excellent cleanser that leaves skin feeling calm, soft and oh so comfortable after application!

Step 2: Follow with a soothing lotion or toner
Many people skip lotion (or toner as it’s otherwise known) but the right lotion can instantly calm skin after cleansing while preparing it for the rest of your routine.

Our recommendation: Pevonia RS2 Gentle Lotion

This alcohol-free calming lotion is the perfect follow-up to your cleanse. It helps soothe and refresh delicate skin while delivering lightweight hydration.

Why it’s a sensitive skin saviour: It’s specifically designed for redness and rosacea prone complexions and is packed with natural plant extracts including chamomile, licorice, green tea, alllantoin and french rose, that instantly relieves irritation, reduces redness, soothes skin, restores your skin's ideal pH balance, and primes the skin cells so they can fully absorb any treatment serums to follow! Think of it as the first layer of comfort for stressed winter skin. Oh and it’s anti-oxidant rich too!

Step 3: Apply a targeted treatment for calming redness and sensitivity
When redness is persistent, targeted treatment products can help provide much needed additional support. These formulas are designed to deliver concentrated soothing ingredients directly where they're needed most!

Our recommendation: Pevonia RS2 Concentrate
If redness is one of your biggest concerns, this lightweight concentrate will be an excellent addition to your routine! It helps reduce visible redness and calm inflammation and reactive skin, while strengthening the skin against environmental stressors.

For those who experience flare-ups throughout winter, this type of targeted treatment really can be particularly beneficial, and it improves overall comfort which is so important too.

For particularly reactive skin: Pevonia Soothing Propolis Concentrate

If your skin becomes extremely reactive during winter, this soothing concentrate provides an extra layer of comfort and calming support.

With antibacterial and decongesting properties thanks to the high formulation of propolis (a sticky resinous mixture made by honeybees from tree sap, plant buds, and their own beeswax and enzymes), it it helps calm irritation while supporting skin repair and strengthening the barrier. It also supports healthy microcirculatio while helping to reduce redness and sensitivity!
It's especially helpful during flare-ups when your skin feels sore, inflamed or unusually sensitive.

Step 4: Strengthen the skin barrier with the right moisturiser
One of the most important steps in managing winter sensitivity is maintaining a healthy, hydrated skin barrier. A strong barrier helps lock in moisture, defend against environmental aggressors and reduce the likelihood of irritation.

Our recommendation: Pevonia RS2 Care Cream

The Pevonia RS2 Care Cream is specifically designed for sensitive, redness-prone skin. Rich in licorice, chamomile and green tea, this nourishing moisturiser helps calm visible redness while providing essential hydration to the skin.

Why it's ideal for winter: It's an excellent daily moisturiser for anyone experiencing winter-related flushing, sensitivity or inflammation. Not only does it deeply hydrate dry, sensitive skin, but it also helps strengthen the skin's natural barrier to better defend against environmental stressors. What's more, it leaves skin feeling incredibly soft, comfortable and protected.

Other ways to reduce winter redness and sensitive skin

Skincare products can make a significant difference, but a few simple lifestyle adjustments can also help minimise redness and irritation.

Avoid hot water
As tempting as steaming-hot showers may be during winter, excessive heat can aggravate redness and further dry out the skin. Wash your skin with lukewarm water instead.

Avoid over-exfoliation
When skin feels flaky, it's easy to reach for exfoliating products more often. However, over-exfoliation can make sensitive skin even more reactive.

Keep skin hydrated
Hydration remains essential, both inside and out. Layering hydrating products and ensuring adequate water intake can help support overall skin health.

Protect your skin against the elements
Wind and cold temperatures can trigger redness and irritation. Scarves, hats and daily SPF can help provide additional protection from environmental stressors. Also consider using a humidifier indoors if heating leaves your skin feeling particularly dry.

Apply your moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp
This will help lock in that much-needed hydration and reduce moisture loss throughout the day.

If your skin always seems redder, drier or more sensitive during winter, don't assume it's something you simply have to put up with. More often than not, it's a sign that your skin barrier needs a little extra support.

By switching to gentle, calming products specifically designed for sensitive skin, you can help reduce visible redness, strengthen your skin barrier and keep your complexion feeling comfortable throughout the colder months.
